Frozen Saskatoon berries
Frozen Saskatoon berries can be enjoyed all year round while the Saskatoon berry season is relatively short. They are normally picked in July, in the middle of summer. Saskatoon berries (also called serviceberries, prairie berries, juneberries, or shadbush) are round berries of a beautiful purple color. Their sweet taste is similar to that of blueberries, but Saskatoon berries have a slightly thicker skin and very small seeds. Some people say that their taste is reminiscent of almonds or pears.
Saskatoon berries grow across Canada, and they have been widely consumed, particularly by indigenous peoples. They're one of the ingredients for the pemmican recipe, a dish made with meat, fat, and dried fruit. The English name of the bay, Saskatoon Berry, comes from its Cree name.
